Winter is supposed to start some time around now, some years earlier, others later.  We usually think of winter beginning with the first real frost… A real frost?, well a real frost is one that is -5°c or bellow… Brrrr!  With these temperatures, our Banksia season finally ends.  Hopefully our Mallee and Hakeas can carry on

Two species of Banksias   can survive these frosts, Banksia spinulosa and B ericifolia - both from Eastern Australia.  They do not flower at the end of the branch, but are found two or three nodes from the end.  So, when pruning, you have to envision where the flowers will be years before they are picked!
